Abstract:
This study aims to explore teachers’ perceptions of the use of mobile devices for instructional delivery in secondary schools in Oyo State. With the rapid advancement of technology and the increasing ubiquity of mobile devices, there is a growing interest in integrating these devices into educational settings. However, the successful implementation of mobile devices in teaching and learning practices depends on various factors, including teachers’ perceptions and attitudes towards their use.
The study employed a qualitative research design, utilizing semi-structured interviews to gather data from a purposive sample of secondary school teachers in Oyo State. The participants were selected based on their experience and willingness to share their perceptions of using mobile devices for instructional delivery. Data analysis involved thematic analysis to identify common themes and patterns in the teachers’ responses.
Preliminary findings indicate that teachers in Oyo State have mixed perceptions regarding the use of mobile devices for instructional delivery. Several themes emerged from the analysis, including perceived benefits, challenges, and factors influencing teachers’ attitudes towards integrating mobile devices in the classroom.
Teachers acknowledged the potential benefits of using mobile devices, such as enhancing student engagement, facilitating access to information, and promoting independent learning. However, they also expressed concerns about potential distractions, lack of technical support, and the need for training to effectively integrate mobile devices into their instructional practices.
Furthermore, the study identified several factors influencing teachers’ attitudes towards using mobile devices, including their level of technological proficiency, access to reliable internet connectivity, availability of educational applications and resources, administrative support, and the perceived impact on students’ academic performance.
The findings of this study have implications for educational policymakers, school administrators, and teacher training institutions in Oyo State. It highlights the need for professional development programs that address teachers’ concerns, provide technical support, and enhance their digital literacy skills to effectively integrate mobile devices into instructional delivery.
In conclusion, this study provides valuable insights into teachers’ perceptions of the use of mobile devices for instructional delivery in secondary schools in Oyo State. The findings contribute to the existing literature on technology integration in education and can guide future initiatives aimed at promoting the effective use of mobile devices in teaching and learning environments.
