Abstract:
Effective financial management is crucial for the smooth operation of educational institutions, including colleges of education. Internal audit guidelines play a vital role in ensuring transparency, accountability, and the prevention of financial irregularities. This study aims to evaluate the extent of managers’ compliance with internal audit guidelines for cash collections and bank transactions in public and private colleges of education in the South East region of Nigeria.

The research will adopt a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative techniques. The study will involve collecting primary data through interviews, questionnaires, and document analysis. A sample of college managers, internal auditors, and finance staff will be selected from both public and private colleges of education in the South East region.

The research will focus on various aspects, including the establishment of internal control systems, adherence to cash handling procedures, segregation of duties, reconciliation of bank transactions, and compliance with financial reporting requirements. The collected data will be analyzed using appropriate statistical techniques and qualitative methods, such as content analysis.

The findings of this study will contribute to the existing literature by providing insights into the level of compliance with internal audit guidelines in colleges of education in the South East region of Nigeria. The results will help identify strengths and weaknesses in current financial management practices and provide recommendations for improvement.

The study’s implications include enhancing financial accountability, reducing the risk of fraud and misappropriation of funds, and promoting efficient financial operations in colleges of education. The research outcomes will be valuable for college administrators, policymakers, and internal auditors in developing appropriate strategies and policies to ensure effective compliance with internal audit guidelines.
