CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION STRATEGIES AND ITS COPING CHOICE BY RICE FARMERS IN ANAMBRA STATE, NIGERIA
Abstract:
Climate change poses significant challenges to agricultural systems worldwide, including rice farming in Anambra State, Nigeria. This study aims to investigate the adaptation strategies employed by rice farmers in Anambra State and examine the factors influencing their coping choices in response to climate change. By understanding the adaptation measures and coping mechanisms utilized by farmers, policymakers and stakeholders can develop targeted interventions to support sustainable rice production in the face of a changing climate.
The research utilizes a mixed-methods approach, combining both quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques. Surveys and interviews are conducted with a representative sample of rice farmers in Anambra State to gather information on their current adaptation strategies, coping choices, and socio-economic characteristics.
Preliminary findings reveal that rice farmers in Anambra State employ a range of adaptation strategies to mitigate the impacts of climate change. These include altering planting dates, adopting drought-tolerant rice varieties, improving water management techniques, and implementing agroforestry practices. However, the adoption of these strategies varies among farmers and is influenced by factors such as access to resources, knowledge levels, risk perceptions, and institutional support.
Furthermore, the study identifies several coping choices utilized by rice farmers to manage climate-related risks. These coping mechanisms encompass diversification into alternative crops, off-farm employment, seeking credit, and engaging in social networks for information sharing and resource pooling.
The research underscores the importance of enhancing farmers’ access to climate information, providing training on climate-smart agricultural practices, improving infrastructure for irrigation, and strengthening institutional support for agricultural adaptation. Additionally, fostering collaboration between farmers, government agencies, and other stakeholders is crucial for promoting sustainable and resilient rice farming systems.
This study contributes to the existing literature on climate change adaptation in agriculture, specifically focusing on rice farming in Anambra State, Nigeria. The findings provide valuable insights for policymakers, researchers, and practitioners involved in climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts within the agricultural sector. By incorporating the perspectives and experiences of rice farmers, effective strategies can be developed to enhance their resilience and ensure food security in the face of climate change.
