Abstract:
This study aims to analyze the patterns and effects of social media usage among gifted and non-gifted senior secondary school students learning in Nigeria. With the widespread availability and accessibility of social media platforms, their impact on various aspects of individuals’ lives, including education, has become a subject of significant interest and concern.
The study employs a mixed-methods approach, including quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews, to gather data from a sample of gifted and non-gifted senior secondary school students across Nigeria. The quantitative phase involves administering a structured questionnaire to investigate the frequency, duration, and purposes of social media usage among the two groups. Additionally, the questionnaire assesses the perceived impact of social media on academic performance, social interactions, and overall well-being.
The qualitative phase comprises in-depth interviews with a subset of participants to gain a deeper understanding of their experiences, attitudes, and perceptions regarding social media usage. The interviews explore the students’ motivations for using social media, the platforms they prefer, and the potential benefits and drawbacks they associate with their usage.
The findings of this study will contribute to the existing body of knowledge on social media usage among gifted and non-gifted senior secondary school students in Nigeria. It is expected that the research will shed light on the similarities and differences in social media habits and effects between the two groups, providing insights into the potential impact on academic performance, social relationships, and overall well-being.
This research carries implications for educators, parents, and policymakers, as it will provide evidence-based recommendations for promoting responsible and beneficial social media usage among students. By understanding the patterns and effects of social media usage, educational stakeholders can develop strategies to harness the potential benefits of social media while mitigating its negative consequences.
