Abstract:
Overcrowding in classrooms is a persistent issue in many public primary schools, and its impact on pupils’ academic achievement is a matter of concern. This study aims to explore the influence of overcrowded classrooms on pupils’ academic achievement in public primary schools in the Idemili South Local Government Area.
The research adopts a mixed-methods approach involving both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods. The primary data sources include classroom observations, teacher interviews, and pupil assessments. A sample of public primary schools in Idemili South Local Government Area will be selected, and data will be collected from both overcrowded and non-overcrowded classrooms.
The quantitative analysis will involve comparing the academic performance of pupils in overcrowded and non-overcrowded classrooms using standardized test scores and other relevant academic indicators. Additionally, qualitative data will be analyzed thematically to identify the experiences and perceptions of teachers and pupils regarding the impact of overcrowding on academic achievement.
The expected findings will provide insights into the specific challenges faced by pupils in overcrowded classrooms and the potential consequences for their academic achievement. It is anticipated that overcrowding may lead to reduced individual attention, increased classroom disruptions, and limited opportunities for active participation, ultimately affecting pupils’ learning outcomes.
The results of this study will contribute to the existing body of knowledge on the effects of overcrowding on pupils’ academic achievement and inform educational policymakers, school administrators, and relevant stakeholders about the need for interventions to address overcrowding in public primary schools. The findings may also guide the development of strategies to enhance teaching and learning environments, promote effective classroom management, and improve pupils’ academic performance in Idemili South and similar educational contexts.
Keywords: overcrowded classrooms, academic achievement, public primary schools, Idemili South Local Government Area, qualitative research, quantitative research, teaching and learning environments.
