EVALUATION OF THE USE OF E-LEARNING FACILITIES IN THE EDUCATIONAL DELIVERY SYSTEM IN UNIVERSITIES IN ENUGU STATE DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC
Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the education sector worldwide, forcing educational institutions to adopt alternative methods of instructional delivery. This study aims to evaluate the use of e-learning facilities in the educational delivery system in universities in Enugu State during the COVID-19 pandemic.
To conduct this evaluation, a mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative data collected through surveys and qualitative data obtained through interviews and focus group discussions. The study targeted students, faculty members, and administrative staff from various universities in Enugu State.
Findings from the study revealed that e-learning facilities played a crucial role in maintaining educational continuity during the pandemic. The majority of the respondents acknowledged that e-learning platforms, such as learning management systems, video conferencing tools, and online resources, were effectively utilized for instructional purposes. Students appreciated the flexibility and accessibility offered by e-learning, allowing them to continue their studies remotely.
However, the study also identified several challenges associated with the use of e-learning facilities. Issues related to internet connectivity, availability of devices, technical difficulties, and lack of digital skills were reported by both students and faculty members. Additionally, some students faced difficulties in adapting to the virtual learning environment, experiencing feelings of isolation and decreased motivation.
Based on the evaluation, recommendations were made to enhance the use of e-learning facilities in the educational delivery system during similar crises. These recommendations included improving internet infrastructure, providing access to devices for disadvantaged students, offering technical support, and conducting training programs to enhance digital literacy among students and faculty members.
In conclusion, the evaluation highlighted the significance of e-learning facilities in ensuring educational continuity during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although challenges were encountered, the use of e-learning platforms proved to be a viable alternative for universities in Enugu State. The findings of this study can guide policymakers, educators, and other stakeholders in addressing the identified challenges and improving the utilization of e-learning facilities in future crises.
