Abstract:
This study investigates the socio-economic factors that influence the adoption of improved oil palm fruits processing technology in Kogi State, Nigeria. The adoption of improved processing technology is essential for enhancing productivity, increasing efficiency, and promoting sustainable practices in the oil palm industry. Understanding the socio-economic factors that drive the adoption of these technologies is crucial for designing effective strategies to promote their uptake among oil palm farmers and processors.
The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather data from oil palm farmers and processors in Kogi State. The quantitative survey collects information on socio-economic characteristics, such as age, gender, education level, household size, farming experience, and access to credit and extension services. Additionally, the survey assesses the level of awareness and knowledge about improved processing technologies, perceived benefits, and perceived barriers to adoption.
The qualitative interviews provide an in-depth understanding of the socio-economic factors influencing adoption. Key informants, including agricultural extension officers, processors, and policymakers, are interviewed to gain insights into the broader contextual factors affecting technology adoption, such as government policies, market dynamics, and social networks.
Preliminary findings indicate that several socio-economic factors significantly influence the adoption of improved oil palm fruits processing technology in Kogi State. These factors include education level, access to credit and extension services, farm size, farming experience, and social networks. Farmers with higher education levels and larger farm sizes are more likely to adopt the improved processing technology. Access to credit and extension services also plays a significant role in facilitating technology adoption by providing financial resources and knowledge dissemination.
Furthermore, the study reveals that the perceived benefits of improved processing technology, such as increased oil extraction efficiency, improved product quality, and higher market value, positively influence adoption decisions. Conversely, perceived barriers, including high initial investment costs, lack of technical knowledge, and limited access to markets, act as deterrents to adoption.
The study’s findings contribute to the existing literature by shedding light on the socio-economic factors that influence the adoption of improved oil palm fruits processing technology in Kogi State, Nigeria. The results will inform policymakers, extension services, and other stakeholders in developing targeted interventions and strategies to promote technology adoption, enhance farmers’ livelihoods, and ensure sustainable development of the oil palm industry in the region.
