NEXUS BETWEEN VICE CHANCELLORS’ SERVANT LEADERSHIP AND LECTURERS’ PROACTIVE PROBLEM-SOLVING IN A SOUTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY IN NIGERIA.

Abstract:

Effective leadership within educational institutions plays a crucial role in promoting a conducive and productive work environment. This study investigates the relationship between vice chancellors’ servant leadership and lecturers’ proactive problem-solving in a Southeastern University in Nigeria.

The concept of servant leadership emphasizes leaders’ commitment to serving their followers and fostering their growth and development. Proactive problem-solving refers to individuals’ ability to anticipate and address challenges before they escalate, thereby enhancing organizational effectiveness.

This research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative survey data and qualitative interviews. The survey instrument comprises validated scales to measure servant leadership behaviors and lecturers’ proactive problem-solving tendencies. The qualitative interviews provide deeper insights into the experiences and perceptions of lecturers regarding servant leadership and proactive problem-solving.

The study aims to investigate the extent to which vice chancellors’ servant leadership behaviors influence lecturers’ proactive problem-solving tendencies. It also explores the underlying mechanisms and factors that mediate or moderate this relationship. Additionally, the research examines potential barriers and challenges faced by lecturers in engaging in proactive problem-solving within the university context.

Findings from this study will contribute to the existing literature on leadership and problem-solving in higher education institutions, particularly in the Nigerian context. The results will provide valuable insights for university administrators, policymakers, and educational practitioners to enhance leadership practices and promote proactive problem-solving among lecturers.

It is anticipated that the study’s outcomes will inform strategies for enhancing servant leadership behaviors among vice chancellors and offer recommendations for fostering a culture of proactive problem-solving among lecturers. Ultimately, these efforts may contribute to improving the overall effectiveness and quality of education in Nigerian universities and potentially extend to other similar educational institutions globally.
