IMPACT OF NATIONAL PROGRAMME ON IMMUNIZATION STRATEGIES AND ITS EFFECTS ON THE HEALTH OF UNDER FIVE CHILDREN AMONG NIGERIAN AIRFORCE IN LAGOS STATE

Abstract:
Immunization is a critical component of public health strategies aimed at preventing infectious diseases and promoting the overall well-being of children. The National Programme on Immunization (NPI) in Nigeria is a comprehensive initiative that seeks to ensure universal access to vaccines for all children, particularly those under the age of five. This study examines the impact of NPI strategies on the health of under-five children among the Nigerian Airforce community in Lagos State.

The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. Quantitative data is obtained through a retrospective analysis of immunization records, measuring the immunization coverage rates among under-five children in the Nigerian Airforce community. Qualitative data is gathered through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with healthcare providers, parents, and caregivers, exploring their perceptions and experiences regarding immunization services.

Preliminary findings indicate that the NPI strategies have had a positive impact on the health of under-five children in the Nigerian Airforce community. Immunization coverage rates are notably high, with a significant proportion of children receiving the recommended vaccines within the recommended timelines. This has contributed to a decrease in the incidence of vaccine-preventable diseases and a corresponding improvement in the overall health outcomes of the target population.

The qualitative analysis reveals several factors contributing to the success of the NPI strategies. These include effective community mobilization and awareness campaigns, accessibility of immunization services through well-established healthcare facilities, and the dedication and competence of healthcare providers. However, challenges such as vaccine hesitancy, logistical issues, and inadequate healthcare infrastructure remain areas of concern that require further attention.

This study underscores the importance of robust immunization strategies in improving the health outcomes of under-five children within the Nigerian Airforce community in Lagos State. The findings provide valuable insights for policymakers, healthcare providers, and community stakeholders to strengthen the NPI implementation, address existing challenges, and sustain the success achieved thus far. By prioritizing immunization, Nigeria can continue to protect its young population from vaccine-preventable diseases and support their overall health and well-being.
