ASSESSING CRIMINOGENIC NEEDS OF CUSTODIAL JUVENILE OFFENDERS IN AWKA AND ENUGU FEDERAL CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES IN NIGERIA
Abstract:
Juvenile delinquency poses a significant challenge to societies worldwide, including Nigeria. Addressing the criminogenic needs of custodial juvenile offenders is crucial for effective rehabilitation and reducing recidivism rates. This study aims to assess the criminogenic needs of custodial juvenile offenders in the Awka and Enugu Federal Correctional Facilities in Nigeria.
The study will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. The quantitative phase will involve administering standardized assessment tools to measure criminogenic risk factors such as antisocial behavior, substance abuse, educational deficits, family dysfunction, and peer influence. Additionally, demographic information and offense history will be collected.
The qualitative phase will consist of individual interviews and focus group discussions with custodial staff, correctional officers, and juvenile offenders. These interviews will explore the contextual factors contributing to juvenile delinquency and the specific criminogenic needs of the incarcerated youth. The perspectives of key stakeholders will provide valuable insights into the challenges faced by custodial facilities in addressing these needs.
Data analysis will involve descriptive statistics, thematic analysis, and triangulation of findings from both quantitative and qualitative data sources. The results will provide an in-depth understanding of the criminogenic needs of custodial juvenile offenders in Awka and Enugu, contributing to evidence-based interventions and policy recommendations.
The findings of this study will have several implications. Firstly, they will inform the development and implementation of targeted interventions addressing the specific criminogenic needs identified among custodial juvenile offenders. Secondly, the study will contribute to the existing literature on juvenile delinquency in Nigeria, offering unique insights into the local context. Lastly, the research outcomes will assist policymakers and correctional authorities in formulating evidence-based strategies to enhance the rehabilitation process and reduce recidivism rates among juvenile offenders.
By examining the criminogenic needs of custodial juvenile offenders in the Awka and Enugu Federal Correctional Facilities, this study aims to provide valuable insights into the factors contributing to juvenile delinquency and inform effective interventions for the rehabilitation and reintegration of young offenders in Nigeria.
