Abstract:
This research study aims to evaluate the gender assessment associated with career choices in agricultural science among secondary school students in Nsukka Local Government Area. The assessment will explore the factors influencing career decisions, with a particular focus on gender-related considerations, in order to identify potential disparities and suggest strategies for promoting gender equality in agricultural science careers.
The study will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative research methods. A structured questionnaire will be administered to a representative sample of secondary school students in Nsukka Local Government Area to collect quantitative data. The questionnaire will assess students’ perceptions, attitudes, and preferences regarding agricultural science as a career choice, considering gender-related factors such as social norms, stereotypes, and parental influence.
In addition to the survey, focus group discussions and interviews will be conducted with students, teachers, and parents to gather qualitative insights and explore the underlying reasons behind gender-based career choices in agricultural science. The qualitative data will provide a deeper understanding of the social and cultural factors shaping these decisions and offer valuable context to interpret the quantitative findings.
The collected data will be analyzed using statistical techniques, such as descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and regression analysis, to identify any significant gender differences in career preferences and factors influencing career choices. The qualitative data will undergo thematic analysis to extract key themes and patterns related to gender and career decision-making.
The findings of this study will provide valuable insights into the gendered perceptions and preferences surrounding agricultural science careers among secondary school students in Nsukka Local Government Area. The research outcomes can inform educational policymakers, school administrators, and career counselors about the need to address gender disparities in career choices and develop interventions to promote gender equality in agricultural science education and employment.
