Abstract:
This study investigates the perceptions of Health and Physical Education (HPE) teachers on coach-created motivational climates in secondary schools in Anambra State. The motivational climate, created by coaches, plays a crucial role in influencing students’ participation, engagement, and overall achievement in physical education. Understanding HPE teachers’ perceptions regarding the motivational climate is essential for designing effective strategies to enhance student motivation and performance.

The study employs a qualitative research design, utilizing semi-structured interviews to gather data from a purposive sample of HPE teachers in secondary schools across Anambra State. The participants’ views and experiences are explored to gain insight into their perceptions of the coach-created motivational climate and its impact on students’ engagement and motivation.

The findings reveal that HPE teachers recognize the significance of a positive and supportive motivational climate in physical education. They highlight that coaches’ behaviors, such as providing constructive feedback, promoting a sense of belonging, encouraging autonomy, and fostering a mastery-oriented environment, have a profound impact on students’ motivation levels. Additionally, the participants emphasize the importance of inclusive practices, fair treatment, and individualized attention in creating an optimal motivational climate.

However, the study also identifies certain challenges faced by HPE teachers in establishing a positive motivational climate. These challenges include limited resources, large class sizes, time constraints, and varying student abilities and interests. The participants suggest that professional development programs, collaboration among teachers, and school support are crucial for addressing these challenges and enhancing the motivational climate.

Based on the findings, this study recommends the implementation of evidence-based strategies to enhance the coach-created motivational climate in secondary schools. These strategies may include providing professional development opportunities for coaches, promoting inclusive practices, creating positive and supportive peer relationships, and incorporating student-centered and mastery-oriented instructional approaches.

In conclusion, this study sheds light on the perceptions of HPE teachers regarding coach-created motivational climates in secondary schools in Anambra State. The findings emphasize the importance of a positive and supportive motivational climate in enhancing student engagement and motivation. The study’s insights can inform educational policymakers, school administrators, and HPE teachers in developing effective strategies to create an optimal motivational climate and thereby improve students’ physical education experiences and outcomes.
