Abstract:
The prevalence of obesity among undergraduate students is a growing concern worldwide, including in Rivers State, Nigeria. Aerobic exercise has long been recognized as an effective strategy for managing obesity and improving cardiovascular health. However, limited research has investigated the specific effects of aerobic exercise on electrocardiogram (ECG) parameters, particularly in the limb leads and augmented leads of obese undergraduate students in Rivers State. This study aimed to examine the effects of aerobic exercise on ECG limb leads and augmented leads among this population.

A pre-test and post-test experimental design was used, involving a total of 100 obese undergraduate students (aged 18-25 years) from various universities in Rivers State. Participants underwent a supervised aerobic exercise intervention consisting of 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, three times a week, for eight weeks. ECG recordings were obtained before and after the intervention using standard 12-lead ECG equipment.

The ECG recordings were analyzed for various parameters, including heart rate, PR interval, QRS duration, QT interval, T wave amplitude, and ST segment changes in the limb leads (I, II, and III) and augmented leads (aVR, aVL, and aVF). Statistical analysis was conducted using appropriate tests to compare the pre- and post-intervention ECG data.

Preliminary results indicated that aerobic exercise intervention led to significant improvements in several ECG parameters. There was a reduction in heart rate (p < 0.001) and PR interval (p < 0.05) after the intervention. Moreover, QRS duration (p < 0.01), QT interval (p < 0.001), and T wave amplitude (p < 0.001) showed significant changes. Additionally, ST segment changes in the limb leads and augmented leads demonstrated improvements (p < 0.001).

These findings suggest that aerobic exercise can positively influence ECG parameters in obese undergraduate students from universities in Rivers State. The improvements observed in heart rate, PR interval, QRS duration, QT interval, T wave amplitude, and ST segment changes indicate enhanced cardiac function and electrical activity following regular aerobic exercise.

Further research is warranted to explore the underlying mechanisms responsible for these ECG changes and to investigate the long-term effects of aerobic exercise on cardiovascular health in this population. These findings can contribute to the development of targeted exercise interventions and promote healthy lifestyle choices among obese undergraduate students in Rivers State.
