Abstract:
The present study aims to investigate the effectiveness of environmental health instruction on the health knowledge of meat sellers in Onitsha Metropolis, Anambra State. The meat-selling industry plays a crucial role in the food supply chain, as meat is a primary source of nutrition for many individuals. However, inadequate knowledge and poor sanitary practices among meat sellers can lead to the transmission of foodborne illnesses to consumers.
The study employed a pre-test/post-test design, with a sample size of 100 meat sellers randomly selected from various markets in Onitsha Metropolis. The participants were divided into two groups: an experimental group that received environmental health instruction and a control group that did not receive any intervention. The environmental health instruction covered topics such as personal hygiene, food handling practices, sanitation, and proper storage of meat products.
Data were collected using a structured questionnaire administered before and after the intervention. The questionnaire assessed the participants’ knowledge regarding food safety practices, hygiene, and sanitation. Statistical analysis, including descriptive statistics and inferential tests, was conducted to compare the pre- and post-intervention knowledge scores between the experimental and control groups.
The results revealed a significant improvement in the health knowledge of meat sellers who received the environmental health instruction compared to the control group. The participants in the experimental group exhibited enhanced knowledge of proper food handling, personal hygiene practices, and the importance of maintaining a clean and safe environment for meat processing and storage.
These findings highlight the importance of environmental health instruction in improving the health knowledge of meat sellers. By enhancing their understanding of food safety practices and promoting hygienic behaviors, the risk of foodborne illnesses can be reduced, leading to improved public health outcomes. The study suggests that implementing regular training programs and educational interventions for meat sellers can contribute to a safer and healthier food supply chain in Onitsha Metropolis.
