Abstract:
The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted educational institutions worldwide, necessitating the need for increased awareness and preparedness among teachers regarding communicable diseases. This study aimed to explore teachers’ awareness of communicable diseases in primary schools amidst the COVID-19 era and its impact on academic performance.
A mixed-methods approach was employed, incorporating both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods. A questionnaire survey was administered to a sample of primary school teachers to assess their awareness levels regarding various communicable diseases, including COVID-19. Additionally, semi-structured interviews were conducted to obtain in-depth insights into teachers’ perceptions and experiences related to disease prevention and academic performance.
Preliminary findings revealed that teachers demonstrated a moderate level of awareness regarding communicable diseases, with COVID-19 knowledge being relatively higher due to its recent prominence. However, there were gaps in knowledge regarding other common communicable diseases prevalent in school settings. Teachers expressed concerns about maintaining a safe and healthy learning environment, emphasizing the need for comprehensive training on disease prevention, hygiene practices, and effective communication strategies.
Furthermore, teachers identified several challenges that hindered their ability to address communicable diseases effectively, such as limited access to personal protective equipment (PPE), inadequate sanitation facilities, and the need for clear guidelines from educational authorities. These challenges were found to impact academic performance by causing disruptions in teaching and learning processes, increased absenteeism, and decreased student engagement.
Based on the study findings, recommendations were made to enhance teachers’ awareness and preparedness for communicable diseases in primary schools. These included the development of comprehensive training programs focusing on disease prevention, hygiene practices, and effective communication strategies. Additionally, it was suggested that educational authorities should provide adequate resources, such as PPE and improved sanitation facilities, to support teachers in creating a safe and healthy learning environment.
In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of teachers’ awareness of communicable diseases in primary schools amidst the COVID-19 era. By prioritizing teacher training and providing necessary resources, educational institutions can enhance teachers’ preparedness, mitigate the risks associated with communicable diseases, and ultimately contribute to improved academic performance in primary schools.
