THE BUSINESS STUDIES AT PRIMARY EDUCATION LEVEL:A CATALYST FOR PREPARING YOUNG CHILDREN FOR THE WORLD OF WORK AND FURTHER STUDIES IN KOGI STATE

ABSTRACT

This research project aims to explore the potential of introducing Business Studies at the primary education level as a catalyst for preparing young children for the world of work and further studies in Kogi State, Nigeria. Business Studies is traditionally seen as a subject taught at the secondary or tertiary levels. However, there is a growing recognition of the importance of introducing business concepts and skills at an earlier stage to equip children with a foundation for future success. This study seeks to investigate the benefits and challenges of introducing Business Studies in primary schools, examine its impact on children’s understanding of the world of work and their readiness for further studies, and propose recommendations for integrating Business Studies into primary education curricula.

A mixed-methods research design will be employed, utilizing surveys, interviews, and classroom observations to collect data from teachers, students, parents, and educational stakeholders in Kogi State. The research objectives include assessing the benefits and challenges of introducing Business Studies at the primary education level, evaluating its impact on children’s understanding of the world of work, exploring its influence on their readiness for further studies, and proposing recommendations for curriculum integration.

The findings of this research project will contribute to the existing body of knowledge by providing insights into the potential benefits and challenges of introducing Business Studies at the primary education level in Kogi State. The research will identify the benefits, such as fostering early exposure to business concepts, developing entrepreneurial thinking, enhancing financial literacy, and promoting career awareness. It will also address the challenges associated with curriculum integration, teacher training, resource availability, and age appropriateness. Additionally, the study will assess the impact of Business Studies on children’s understanding of the world of work, including their knowledge of various occupations, workplace skills, and professional ethics. It will also explore the influence of Business Studies on their readiness for further studies, such as secondary education and vocational training. Furthermore, the research will propose recommendations for integrating Business Studies into primary education curricula, including curriculum frameworks, teacher training programs, resource development, and collaboration with the business community.
