Abstract:
This abstract provides an overview of the practical skill needs of technical college graduates from MVMW (Mechanical, Electrical, and Vocational Materials Works) in Anambra and Enugu States, Nigeria, with a focus on their employability in the current job market. The study aims to identify the specific practical skills that are highly sought after by employers in these states and to highlight the challenges faced by technical college graduates in securing employment.
The research methodology employed in this study involved a combination of literature review, surveys, and interviews with key stakeholders, including employers, technical college graduates, and educators. The data collected was analyzed using qualitative and quantitative techniques.
The findings indicate that there is a significant gap between the practical skill needs of employers and the skills possessed by technical college graduates. Employers in Anambra and Enugu States are increasingly looking for graduates who possess hands-on practical skills relevant to their industries. These skills include technical proficiency in areas such as electrical and mechanical engineering, as well as vocational skills related to materials works.
Furthermore, the study reveals several challenges faced by technical college graduates in acquiring and demonstrating practical skills. These challenges include inadequate infrastructure and equipment in technical colleges, outdated curriculum that does not align with industry requirements, and a lack of industry collaboration and internships to provide real-world exposure.
To address these issues, the study recommends several strategies. Firstly, there is a need for comprehensive curriculum reform in technical colleges to ensure the inclusion of up-to-date practical skills. Secondly, collaboration between technical colleges and industries should be encouraged through internships, apprenticeships, and industry partnerships. Additionally, investment in infrastructure and equipment in technical colleges is crucial to facilitate hands-on learning experiences.
In conclusion, the practical skill needs of technical college graduates from MVMW in Anambra and Enugu States are not adequately met, resulting in a gap between industry requirements and graduate capabilities. Addressing this gap requires a multi-faceted approach involving curriculum reform, industry collaboration, and infrastructure development to enhance the employability of technical college graduates and support economic growth in the region.
