Abstract:
This study investigates the influence of mental health status on the academic achievement of public secondary school students in Anambra State. Mental health plays a vital role in students’ overall well-being and has been recognized as a crucial factor affecting academic performance. However, there is a lack of comprehensive research exploring the relationship between mental health and academic achievement specifically among secondary school students in Anambra State.

The study adopts a quantitative research design, utilizing a sample of public secondary school students in Anambra State. Data collection involves the administration of standardized questionnaires to assess students’ mental health status and academic achievement. The mental health assessment encompasses various dimensions, including stress levels, anxiety, depression, and self-esteem, while academic achievement is measured through students’ academic records and self-reported grades.

Statistical analyses, such as correlation and regression, will be employed to examine the relationship between mental health status and academic achievement. Additionally, potential moderating variables, such as gender, socioeconomic status, and academic support, will be considered to determine their impact on the relationship.

The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the existing literature on the association between mental health and academic achievement, particularly within the context of public secondary schools in Anambra State. The results will provide insights into the specific mental health challenges faced by students and their implications for academic success. Such knowledge can inform educational policymakers, school administrators, and mental health professionals on the importance of addressing mental health issues and implementing appropriate interventions to support students’ well-being and enhance their academic performance.

The research findings may guide the development of targeted interventions, including counseling services, mental health awareness programs, and academic support strategies, to foster a conducive learning environment and improve students’ mental health and academic outcomes. Ultimately, this study aims to contribute to the overall well-being and educational attainment of public secondary school students in Anambra State by highlighting the significance of mental health in their academic journey.
