Abstract:
This abstract provides a concise overview of a study conducted to examine the effects of disability on education, with a specific focus on persons with impairments in the University of Lagos. The study aimed to identify the challenges faced by students with disabilities in accessing and participating in higher education and to explore the potential consequences on their educational experiences.
The research utilized a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. A sample of students with impairments enrolled in the University of Lagos was selected for participation. The quantitative data were collected through a structured questionnaire, while the qualitative data were gathered through in-depth interviews.
The findings of the study revealed several key effects of disability on education among the participants. Firstly, students with impairments encountered physical barriers within the university environment, such as inaccessible infrastructure and limited mobility aids, which hindered their access to educational facilities. Secondly, the study highlighted the prevalence of attitudinal barriers, including stigma, stereotyping, and discrimination, which negatively influenced the academic and social integration of students with disabilities. Additionally, the research shed light on the lack of adequate support services and accommodations, which further impeded their educational progress.
The effects of disability on education were found to have significant consequences for the academic performance, mental well-being, and overall educational experience of students with impairments. The study underscored the need for comprehensive disability-inclusive policies and practices within educational institutions to address the identified challenges. Recommendations included improving physical accessibility, fostering inclusive attitudes and awareness, providing assistive technologies and support services, and promoting inclusive teaching and learning strategies.
The study contributes to the existing body of knowledge on disability and education, specifically within the context of higher education in Nigeria. By highlighting the effects of disability on education, it provides insights that can inform the development of inclusive policies and practices in universities and support efforts to ensure equal educational opportunities for students with impairments.
