Abstract:
The widespread adoption of mobile phones among students has significantly influenced their behavior and learning patterns in educational institutions worldwide. This study aimed to investigate the attitude and perception of lecturers at Emmanuel Alayande College of Education, Oyo, Nigeria, concerning students’ mobile phone usage in the classroom.

The research employed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques. A questionnaire survey was administered to a sample of lecturers, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with a subset of participants. The questionnaire consisted of Likert-scale items, while the interviews allowed for in-depth exploration of lecturers’ perspectives.

Preliminary findings from the study indicated that lecturers held a predominantly negative attitude towards students’ mobile phone usage in the classroom. The majority of lecturers perceived mobile phones as distractions that hindered students’ concentration and engagement in academic activities. They expressed concerns about students’ reduced attention spans, decreased interaction, and compromised academic performance due to excessive use of mobile phones during lectures.

Furthermore, lecturers highlighted challenges in managing students’ mobile phone usage and enforcing discipline in the classroom. They reported encountering difficulties in maintaining a conducive learning environment and managing disruptions caused by mobile phone-related activities such as texting, social media browsing, and gaming.

However, a subset of lecturers acknowledged the potential benefits of mobile phone usage in the classroom, such as accessing educational resources, promoting collaboration, and facilitating communication. They emphasized the need for a balanced approach that leverages mobile technology while setting clear boundaries and guidelines for responsible usage.

In conclusion, this study sheds light on lecturers’ attitude and perception towards students’ mobile phone classroom usage in Emmanuel Alayande College of Education, Oyo, Nigeria. The findings underline the prevailing concerns and challenges faced by lecturers in managing mobile phone-related distractions. The study also highlights the potential of mobile phones as tools for enhancing learning if utilized appropriately and under supportive frameworks. The results of this study have implications for educational institutions and policymakers in formulating guidelines and interventions to address the issue of mobile phone usage in classrooms effectively.
