Abstract:
This abstract provides a summary of a study investigating the influence of familial characteristics on the psychosocial development of adolescents in Lagos State, Nigeria. The purpose of the study was to gain a deeper understanding of how various familial factors impact the psychosocial well-being and development of adolescents in this particular region.
The study employed a mixed-methods research design, combining qualitative and quantitative approaches. A sample of adolescents aged 13 to 19 years was selected from different secondary schools in Lagos State. The data collection process involved structured interviews, questionnaires, and focus group discussions.
Findings from the study indicated that familial characteristics play a significant role in influencing the psychosocial development of adolescents. Several key factors emerged as influential in this regard, including family structure, parental involvement, parental support, family communication patterns, and socioeconomic status. Adolescents from intact families and those with high levels of parental involvement and support demonstrated better psychosocial outcomes compared to those from broken families or with limited parental involvement.
Moreover, the study revealed the importance of effective family communication in promoting positive psychosocial development among adolescents. Open and supportive communication within the family was associated with higher self-esteem, emotional well-being, and stronger social relationships among adolescents.
Furthermore, the study highlighted the influence of socioeconomic status on psychosocial development. Adolescents from families with higher socioeconomic status generally had access to better educational opportunities, healthcare, and recreational activities, which positively impacted their overall psychosocial well-being.
These findings have significant implications for policymakers, educators, and practitioners involved in adolescent development and well-being. They underscore the importance of addressing familial characteristics and providing support systems that enhance positive psychosocial development in adolescents. Interventions aimed at strengthening family structures, promoting parental involvement, improving communication patterns, and addressing socioeconomic disparities can contribute to the well-being and success of adolescents in Lagos State, Nigeria.
In conclusion, this study highlights the vital role of familial characteristics in shaping the psychosocial development of adolescents in Lagos State, Nigeria. Understanding these factors can inform the development of targeted interventions to promote positive outcomes and improve the overall well-being of adolescents in this region.
