Abstract:
This abstract highlights the concerning issue of alcoholism and its impact on the mental wellness of youths in Oyo Metropolis, Nigeria. The increasing prevalence of alcoholism among young individuals has raised significant concerns regarding their overall well-being and the need for effective counseling interventions.
Alcoholism among youths poses numerous challenges to their mental health, as it often leads to a range of psychological and emotional problems. This abstract explores the implications of alcoholism on mental wellness, focusing on the specific context of Oyo Metropolis.
The study utilizes a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data obtained through surveys and qualitative data from in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. The participants include youths aged 18 to 25 years residing in Oyo Metropolis. The quantitative data provide insights into the prevalence and patterns of alcohol consumption among youths, while the qualitative data offer a deeper understanding of the associated mental health challenges.
The findings reveal a high prevalence of alcoholism among youths in Oyo Metropolis, with significant negative implications for mental wellness. The study identifies several factors contributing to alcoholism, including peer pressure, socioeconomic factors, and inadequate coping mechanisms for stress and emotional difficulties. The mental health consequences associated with alcoholism include increased risk of depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and impaired cognitive functioning.
The implications for counseling services are manifold. Effective counseling interventions should be implemented to address the issue of alcoholism among youths in Oyo Metropolis. These interventions should focus on providing psychoeducation, enhancing coping skills, and promoting healthier alternatives to alcohol consumption. Additionally, counselors must be trained in culturally sensitive approaches to understand the unique challenges faced by youths in Oyo Metropolis.
The abstract concludes by emphasizing the urgent need for collaborative efforts among stakeholders, including government agencies, educational institutions, healthcare providers, and community organizations, to develop comprehensive prevention and intervention strategies. By prioritizing the mental wellness of youths and addressing the underlying factors contributing to alcoholism, it is possible to promote healthier lifestyles and well-being among the youth population in Oyo Metropolis.
