TEACHERS’ PERCEIVED EFFECTIVENESS OF PRINCIPALS’ SCHOOL PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ANAMBRA STATE
Abstract:
This study examines the perceived effectiveness of principals’ school personnel management as perceived by teachers in public secondary schools in Anambra State. Effective personnel management plays a crucial role in creating a conducive and productive learning environment for students. The study aims to identify the factors that contribute to effective personnel management and investigate the extent to which principals’ management practices align with teachers’ expectations.
The research methodology employed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. A sample of teachers from various public secondary schools in Anambra State was selected using a stratified random sampling technique. The quantitative data were collected through a structured questionnaire, while the qualitative data were gathered through in-depth interviews.
The findings of the study revealed that teachers in public secondary schools in Anambra State perceive principals’ school personnel management as crucial for the effective functioning of their schools. The study identified several key factors that contribute to effective personnel management, including clear communication, supportive leadership, fair decision-making, professional development opportunities, and recognition of teachers’ contributions. However, the study also uncovered areas where improvement is needed, such as addressing issues of favoritism, enhancing teacher evaluation processes, and promoting collaborative decision-making.
Based on the findings, recommendations were made to enhance the effectiveness of principals’ school personnel management in public secondary schools in Anambra State. These recommendations emphasize the importance of providing principals with training and professional development opportunities focused on personnel management skills. Additionally, fostering a culture of open communication, transparency, and collaboration among school staff is essential for creating an environment conducive to effective personnel management.
The study contributes to the existing body of knowledge on school personnel management by providing insights into the perceptions of teachers in Anambra State. The findings can inform policymakers, school administrators, and principals in developing strategies and policies that promote effective personnel management practices in public secondary schools.
