REBIRTH OF THEATRE USING SPATIAL FLEXIBILITY AS A CONCEPT: THE CASE OF NON-EXISTENCE OF FUNCTIONAL PERFORMING ART THEATRE IN AWKA.
Abstract:
This abstract highlights the potential for a resurgence of theatre in Awka, focusing on the concept of spatial flexibility as a means to address the absence of a functional performing art theatre in the city. Awka, a vibrant cultural center with a rich history, currently lacks a dedicated venue for theatrical performances, hindering the growth and development of the local theatre scene. This study proposes an innovative approach that embraces the notion of spatial flexibility to revitalize theatre and provide a platform for artistic expression.
The research draws on existing literature, case studies, and interviews with theatre professionals to explore the challenges faced by the absence of a functional performing art theatre in Awka. It investigates how spatial flexibility can be employed to overcome these challenges and create dynamic performance spaces that adapt to the needs of various theatrical productions. By utilizing adaptable and non-traditional venues, such as outdoor locations, temporary structures, or repurposed spaces, theatre practitioners can foster creativity, accessibility, and engagement with audiences.
The study also examines the potential benefits of spatial flexibility in Awka’s theatre scene, including increased opportunities for experimentation, collaboration, and community involvement. It explores how a flexible approach can cater to diverse performance styles, ranging from traditional to contemporary, and accommodate multidisciplinary productions that incorporate elements of dance, music, and visual arts.
Furthermore, the research investigates the logistical considerations and technical requirements involved in implementing spatially flexible theatre spaces. It examines the challenges and opportunities associated with seating arrangements, stage design, acoustics, lighting, and audience comfort, emphasizing the need for adaptable infrastructure and innovative design concepts.
Ultimately, this study aims to inspire stakeholders in Awka’s cultural and artistic community to envision and implement a functional performing art theatre that embraces the concept of spatial flexibility. By doing so, it seeks to rejuvenate the local theatre scene, foster artistic expression, and provide a platform for the vibrant cultural heritage of Awka to flourish.
