ASSESSING SCIENCE TEACHERS’ ATTITUDE, KNOWLEDGE, AND APPLICATION OF STEM EDUCATION IN TARABA STATE.
Abstract:
This study aims to assess the attitude, knowledge, and application of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education among science teachers in Taraba State. STEM education is an interdisciplinary approach that integrates these four disciplines to foster critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and creativity among students. The successful implementation of STEM education requires competent and enthusiastic teachers who possess a positive attitude, sufficient knowledge, and effective application strategies.
The study will adopt a mixed-methods research design, combining qualitative and quantitative data collection techniques. The quantitative phase will involve a survey questionnaire administered to a sample of science teachers in Taraba State. The questionnaire will assess various dimensions, including teachers’ attitudes towards STEM education, their knowledge of STEM concepts and pedagogical strategies, and their perceived level of application and integration of STEM practices in their teaching.
In the qualitative phase, a subset of science teachers will be selected for in-depth interviews and classroom observations. This will provide a deeper understanding of teachers’ experiences, challenges, and perceptions related to STEM education. The qualitative data will complement the quantitative findings, allowing for a comprehensive assessment of the factors influencing science teachers’ attitude, knowledge, and application of STEM education.
The study’s findings will contribute to the existing literature on STEM education in Nigeria, specifically in Taraba State. The results will inform policymakers, curriculum developers, and teacher training programs on the current state of STEM education in the region. Additionally, the study will identify areas that require improvement, such as professional development opportunities for teachers and the integration of STEM practices into the science curriculum.
Ultimately, the research aims to enhance science teachers’ capacity to effectively implement STEM education in Taraba State schools. By addressing their attitudes, knowledge, and application of STEM, the study strives to contribute to the overall improvement of science education and prepare students for future careers in STEM fields.
