Abstract:
This abstract provides a summary of a research study aimed at unlocking the management competence of youths involved in rabbit rearing for self-reliance in the Nsukka Senatorial Zone of Enugu State, Nigeria.
Rabbit farming has emerged as a viable and sustainable agricultural enterprise, offering numerous economic and nutritional benefits. However, despite its potential, many youths in the Nsukka Senatorial Zone face challenges in effectively managing rabbit farming operations, limiting their capacity to harness the full potential of this sector.
The research study adopted a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather data from youth rabbit farmers in the Nsukka Senatorial Zone. The study aimed to identify the key management competencies required for successful rabbit rearing and to develop strategies to enhance youth engagement and competence in this field.
Preliminary findings indicate that while many youths in the area are interested in rabbit farming, they lack essential management skills and knowledge to optimize their operations. The study identified key competency areas such as breeding, nutrition, health management, marketing, and financial management as critical for sustainable rabbit farming.
Based on the findings, a comprehensive training and mentorship program was developed to address the identified gaps in management competence. The program includes practical training sessions, workshops, and mentorship opportunities, aimed at equipping youth rabbit farmers with the necessary skills and knowledge to improve their productivity and income generation.
The research study also emphasizes the importance of creating supportive policies and infrastructure to promote youth engagement in rabbit farming. Access to affordable credit, improved market linkages, and the establishment of rabbit cooperatives were identified as crucial factors for unlocking the full potential of youth-led rabbit farming in the Nsukka Senatorial Zone.
The findings of this study contribute to the existing literature on agricultural entrepreneurship and youth empowerment in Nigeria. By unlocking the management competence of youths involved in rabbit rearing, this research promotes self-reliance, rural development, and sustainable agricultural practices in the Nsukka Senatorial Zone of Enugu State, Nigeria.
