Abstract:
This abstract provides a summary of a study conducted to investigate the relationship between lecturers’ job performance and internal efficiency in public universities in the South-West region of Nigeria. The study aimed to explore the factors influencing lecturers’ job performance and their impact on the overall efficiency of the universities.
The research employed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. A sample of lecturers from various disciplines and ranks was selected using stratified random sampling techniques. The data collection instruments included structured questionnaires and semi-structured interviews.
The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. The qualitative data were transcribed and analyzed thematically to provide deeper insights into the factors affecting lecturers’ job performance and internal efficiency.
Preliminary findings from the study indicate that several factors influence lecturers’ job performance and internal efficiency in public universities in the South-West region of Nigeria. These factors include lecturers’ qualifications, teaching experience, workload, motivation, institutional support, and work environment. The results suggest that lecturers’ job satisfaction and motivation significantly influence their performance, which, in turn, affects the overall efficiency of the institutions.
The study also identified challenges faced by lecturers in their job performance, such as inadequate resources, bureaucratic processes, and insufficient professional development opportunities. Additionally, the research revealed that effective leadership, supportive organizational culture, and academic freedom positively impact lecturers’ performance and internal efficiency.
The findings of this study have implications for university administrators, policymakers, and lecturers themselves. The results highlight the importance of addressing the identified challenges to enhance lecturers’ job performance and promote internal efficiency in public universities. Strategies such as providing adequate resources, improving support systems, fostering a positive work environment, and promoting professional development opportunities are recommended to optimize lecturers’ performance and overall institutional efficiency.
In conclusion, this study contributes to the growing body of knowledge on lecturers’ job performance and internal efficiency in public universities in the South-West region of Nigeria. It highlights the multifaceted nature of the factors influencing lecturers’ performance and provides insights for improving the efficiency of these institutions. Further research is encouraged to explore additional variables and examine the generalizability of the findings to other regions and contexts within Nigeria and beyond.
