Abstract:
Absenteeism and tardiness among employees have significant implications for organizational productivity and efficiency. This study aims to investigate the socio-economic and demographic variables perceived to contribute to absenteeism and tardiness among local government employees in Ekiti State, Nigeria.
The study employs a quantitative research design, collecting data through structured questionnaires distributed among a sample of local government employees. The questionnaire measures variables such as age, gender, educational level, income, job satisfaction, family responsibilities, transportation difficulties, and health status. The data collected are analyzed using appropriate statistical techniques, including descriptive statistics and regression analysis.
Preliminary findings suggest that several socio-economic and demographic variables influence absenteeism and tardiness among local government employees in Ekiti State. Factors such as low income, dissatisfaction with the job, transportation difficulties, and health issues are perceived as significant contributors to absenteeism and tardiness. Moreover, family responsibilities, including caring for children or elderly family members, are also identified as influential factors.
These findings have important implications for local government authorities and policymakers in Ekiti State. Addressing the underlying socio-economic factors that contribute to absenteeism and tardiness, such as improving income levels and providing better transportation infrastructure, may help reduce employee absenteeism and tardiness. Additionally, implementing family-friendly policies and support systems can assist employees in managing their family responsibilities, which may positively impact attendance and punctuality.
The study contributes to the existing literature on employee absenteeism and tardiness by focusing on the context of local government employees in Ekiti State, Nigeria. It provides insights into the specific socio-economic and demographic factors that are perceived to influence absenteeism and tardiness in this particular setting. The findings can guide interventions and policies aimed at enhancing employee attendance and punctuality, ultimately improving organizational performance and service delivery within local government departments.
