Abstract:
This study aims to investigate the perceived influence of learning resources availability and utilization on senior secondary school students’ performance in biology within the Ilorin metropolis. The availability and effective utilization of learning resources play a crucial role in shaping students’ academic performance, particularly in science subjects such as biology.
The study employed a quantitative research design, and data were collected through a structured questionnaire administered to a sample of senior secondary school students in Ilorin metropolis. The questionnaire assessed students’ perceptions regarding the availability and utilization of learning resources, including textbooks, laboratory equipment, multimedia aids, and internet access.
The findings of the study revealed that the availability of learning resources significantly influenced students’ performance in biology. Students who reported having access to an adequate number of textbooks, well-equipped laboratories, multimedia aids, and internet facilities demonstrated better academic performance in biology compared to those who lacked such resources. Additionally, the study found that students’ utilization of these resources, such as actively engaging with textbooks, conducting experiments in the laboratory, and utilizing online platforms for research purposes, positively impacted their performance.
Furthermore, the study identified some challenges hindering the availability and utilization of learning resources. These challenges included inadequate funding for educational institutions, limited availability of textbooks and laboratory equipment, inadequate training for teachers on utilizing multimedia aids effectively, and limited internet access in schools.
Based on the findings, it is recommended that educational policymakers and stakeholders prioritize the provision of adequate learning resources in senior secondary schools. This includes ensuring the availability of up-to-date textbooks, well-equipped laboratories, and facilitating access to multimedia aids and the internet. Additionally, teacher training programs should be implemented to enhance their proficiency in utilizing various learning resources effectively.
In conclusion, the perceived availability and utilization of learning resources significantly influence senior secondary school students’ performance in biology in the Ilorin metropolis. Adequate provision and effective utilization of learning resources should be prioritized to enhance students’ academic achievements in biology and other science subjects.
