Abstract:
Career mentoring plays a vital role in shaping the future prospects of senior secondary school students. This abstract presents an overview of a study conducted to investigate the knowledge and approach to career mentoring among senior secondary school students in Owerri Metropolis.

The study employed a mixed-methods research design, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. A sample of senior secondary school students from various schools in Owerri Metropolis was selected using a stratified random sampling technique. The participants were surveyed to assess their knowledge of career mentoring, including its objectives, benefits, and potential challenges. Additionally, interviews were conducted with a subset of students to obtain in-depth insights into their experiences and perceptions of career mentoring.

Preliminary findings indicate that while senior secondary school students in Owerri Metropolis possess a basic understanding of career mentoring, there are significant gaps in their knowledge regarding its specific objectives and potential benefits. Furthermore, the study revealed that students often face challenges in accessing career mentoring resources and guidance, primarily due to limited availability and awareness of such programs.

The qualitative data provided valuable insights into the students’ experiences with career mentoring. Several students expressed a desire for more personalized and practical career guidance, emphasizing the need for mentorship programs that offer hands-on experiences, industry exposure, and connections with professionals in their desired fields.

The implications of these findings suggest a need for comprehensive and accessible career mentoring programs in senior secondary schools in Owerri Metropolis. These programs should focus on enhancing students’ knowledge of career options, providing guidance on educational pathways, and facilitating connections with mentors from various industries. Additionally, efforts should be made to raise awareness among students, parents, and educational institutions about the importance and benefits of career mentoring.

In conclusion, the study highlights the importance of improving knowledge and approach to career mentoring among senior secondary school students in Owerri Metropolis. By addressing the identified gaps and challenges, policymakers, educators, and stakeholders can contribute to the holistic development and successful transition of students from school to the workforce, ultimately fostering a more informed and empowered youth population.
