Abstract:
This study aims to investigate the relationship between cognitive style and gender among science and art cadets at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in Kaduna, Nigeria. Cognitive style refers to an individual’s preferred way of perceiving and processing information, which can have implications for learning, problem-solving, and decision-making.
The research will adopt a quantitative approach, employing a survey questionnaire to collect data from a sample of science and art cadets at the NDA. The Cognitive Style Index (CSI) will be used to assess the cognitive styles of the participants. The CSI measures cognitive styles along two dimensions: verbal-imagery and field independence-field dependence.
The study will specifically examine whether there are gender differences in cognitive styles among science and art cadets. It will explore whether male and female cadets differ in their preference for verbal or imagery-based processing and their level of field independence or dependence.
The findings of this study could have important implications for educational and training programs at the NDA. Understanding the cognitive styles of cadets, particularly in relation to gender, can help tailor instruction and support systems to optimize learning outcomes and performance. Additionally, the study may contribute to the existing literature on cognitive styles and gender differences in educational and military contexts, providing insights into potential factors that influence success and engagement in science and art disciplines.
The research will be conducted with ethical considerations, ensuring participant confidentiality and voluntary participation. The data collected will be analyzed using appropriate statistical techniques to determine the relationship between cognitive style and gender among science and art cadets at the NDA.
