Abstract:
Vocational guidance services play a crucial role in assisting students, even at the primary school level, in making informed decisions about their future career paths. This abstract aims to provide a summary of the performance of vocational guidance services in primary schools in Yaba, Lagos.
The study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. A sample of primary schools in the Yaba area of Lagos was selected, and surveys were administered to teachers, students, and parents to gather information about the vocational guidance services provided in the schools. Additionally, in-depth interviews were conducted with school counselors and administrators to gain insights into the challenges and successes of the guidance programs.
Preliminary findings indicate that the provision of vocational guidance services in primary schools in Yaba, Lagos, is limited and needs improvement. The survey results revealed that a significant percentage of teachers, students, and parents were unaware of the existence and importance of vocational guidance services in their schools. This lack of awareness contributes to a lack of utilization of the available services.
Moreover, the study identified several challenges faced by the vocational guidance programs in primary schools. These challenges include a shortage of qualified school counselors, inadequate resources and materials for career exploration, and insufficient collaboration between schools and industries to provide exposure to various vocations.
However, despite these challenges, a few primary schools in Yaba, Lagos, showcased effective vocational guidance services. These schools had dedicated and qualified school counselors who actively engaged students in career exploration activities, organized guest speaker sessions, and facilitated visits to industries for hands-on experiences.
Based on the findings, recommendations for improving the performance of vocational guidance services in primary schools in Yaba, Lagos, include:
Enhancing awareness among teachers, students, and parents about the importance and benefits of vocational guidance services.
Recruiting and training qualified school counselors to provide comprehensive guidance and counseling services.
Allocating adequate resources and materials for career exploration activities.
Establishing partnerships between schools and industries to facilitate vocational exposure and internships for students.
In conclusion, the performance of vocational guidance services in primary schools in Yaba, Lagos, is currently suboptimal. However, with targeted interventions and collaborative efforts between stakeholders, the provision of vocational guidance can be significantly improved, enabling primary school students to make well-informed decisions about their future career paths.
