Abstract:
Women’s participation in vocational training programmes plays a crucial role in promoting gender equality, economic empowerment, and sustainable development. However, in Edo State, Nigeria, women’s participation in such programs remains disproportionately low. This abstract explores strategies to enhance women’s participation in vocational training programmes in Edo State, with a focus on addressing the underlying barriers and promoting inclusivity.
This study employs a qualitative research approach, utilizing interviews, focus group discussions, and document analysis to gather relevant data. The research reveals several key factors contributing to the low participation of women in vocational training programmes, including socio-cultural norms, limited access to information and resources, gender-based discrimination, and inadequate support systems.
To enhance women’s participation, the study proposes a multi-faceted approach. Firstly, awareness campaigns and sensitization programs should be conducted to challenge patriarchal beliefs and promote the value of women in vocational training. Secondly, efforts should be made to improve access to information and resources by establishing information centers, providing scholarships, and offering flexible training schedules to accommodate women’s domestic responsibilities.
Furthermore, addressing gender-based discrimination requires the implementation of policies that protect women’s rights and ensure equal opportunities in vocational training. This can be achieved through collaboration between government agencies, civil society organizations, and training institutions to develop and enforce gender-sensitive policies.
Lastly, the establishment of support systems, such as mentorship programs and networking opportunities, can provide women with the necessary guidance and encouragement to pursue vocational training. Additionally, creating safe and inclusive learning environments that address the specific needs of women, such as childcare facilities and transportation assistance, can further facilitate their participation.
By implementing these strategies, Edo State can enhance women’s participation in vocational training programmes, leading to increased economic opportunities, improved livelihoods, and gender equality. This abstract provides a foundation for future research and policy development aimed at promoting women’s empowerment and sustainable development in Edo State and beyond.
