Abstract:
Community development plays a vital role in fostering social progress and improving the well-being of citizens. This abstract presents an overview of a study conducted in Oredo Local Government Council of Edo State, Nigeria, aimed at assessing citizens’ awareness and level of participation in the community development process. The study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather comprehensive data.
The objectives of the study were to evaluate citizens’ awareness of community development initiatives, identify factors influencing their level of awareness, and understand the extent of citizens’ participation in community development activities. The research was guided by the theoretical framework of participatory development, emphasizing the importance of involving community members in decision-making processes.
The quantitative phase involved the distribution of structured questionnaires to a representative sample of residents in Oredo Local Government Council. The survey collected data on demographics, awareness of community development projects, and the level of citizens’ participation. The qualitative phase consisted of in-depth interviews with community leaders, government officials, and selected residents to gain deeper insights into the community dynamics and factors affecting citizens’ participation.
Preliminary findings indicate that while a significant proportion of citizens in Oredo Local Government Council are aware of community development initiatives, their level of participation remains relatively low. Factors identified as influencing citizens’ awareness and participation include lack of information dissemination, limited access to resources, inadequate community mobilization efforts, and a perceived lack of transparency in decision-making processes.
The study’s implications highlight the need for improved communication strategies to enhance citizens’ awareness of community development initiatives. Additionally, efforts should be made to address barriers to participation by providing equitable access to resources and fostering inclusive decision-making processes. The findings contribute to the existing literature on community development and provide valuable insights for policymakers, government officials, and community leaders seeking to promote active citizen engagement in the development process.
