Abstract:
This study aimed to assess the preference for poultry products among the elites of Asaba, Delta State. Poultry products play a vital role in meeting the nutritional needs of the population, and understanding consumer preferences is crucial for effective marketing strategies and sustainable development of the poultry industry. The study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews.
The quantitative survey involved a sample of 300 elites from various socioeconomic backgrounds in Asaba. The survey questionnaire covered demographic information and assessed factors influencing poultry product preferences, including taste, price, nutritional value, safety, and convenience. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential analysis techniques.
The qualitative interviews were conducted with a subset of participants to gain deeper insights into their preferences. Thematic analysis was applied to identify recurring themes and patterns in the interview data.
The findings revealed that the elites of Asaba had a high preference for poultry products, with chicken being the most preferred choice. Taste emerged as the primary factor influencing their preference, followed by safety and nutritional value. Price and convenience were found to be less influential factors. Additionally, the study identified a growing inclination towards organic and locally sourced poultry products among the elites, driven by concerns for health and sustainability.
The study contributes to the existing literature on consumer preferences for poultry products and provides valuable insights for poultry producers, marketers, and policymakers. It highlights the importance of taste, safety, and nutritional value in promoting poultry products among the elite consumers. The findings also suggest opportunities for the development of niche markets for organic and locally sourced poultry products.
Further research is recommended to explore the underlying reasons behind the identified preferences and to assess the impact of these preferences on the poultry industry in Asaba, Delta State. Additionally, comparative studies across different regions and consumer segments would enhance our understanding of the broader consumer preferences for poultry products in Nigeria.
