Abstract:
This abstract provides a summary of a study that investigates the perceived influence of drug abuse on the suicidal tendencies of undergraduates at the University of Lagos. The study aims to explore the relationship between drug abuse and the prevalence of suicidal thoughts and behaviors among the student population.
The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. A sample of undergraduate students will be selected through a random sampling technique, ensuring representation across various faculties and demographic characteristics. The quantitative survey will assess the prevalence and patterns of drug abuse, as well as the presence of suicidal tendencies among the participants. The qualitative interviews will provide in-depth insights into the perceived influence of drug abuse on their mental health and suicidal tendencies.
The study hypothesizes that there is a positive association between drug abuse and suicidal tendencies among undergraduate students. It further hypothesizes that specific factors, such as the type of drugs consumed, frequency of use, and the presence of any co-occurring mental health disorders, may exacerbate the relationship between drug abuse and suicidal tendencies.
The findings of this study may have substantial implications for the development of targeted prevention and intervention strategies aimed at reducing drug abuse and mitigating suicidal tendencies among undergraduates. By understanding the perceived influence of drug abuse on mental health and suicidal tendencies, educational institutions like the University of Lagos can implement effective policies and support services to address these issues.
Through the dissemination of the study’s results, it is hoped that awareness will be raised among stakeholders, including university administrators, mental health professionals, and students themselves, about the potential risks associated with drug abuse and its impact on mental well-being. This knowledge can contribute to the formulation of evidence-based policies and interventions that prioritize the mental health and overall well-being of undergraduate students, fostering a supportive and nurturing campus environment.
