Abstract:
Deviant behaviors among secondary school students have become a growing concern in Lagos, Nigeria. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence and characteristics of deviant behaviors exhibited by secondary school students in Lagos, and explore the implications of these behaviors for counseling interventions.
The study adopts a mixed-methods research design, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. A representative sample of secondary school students from different schools in Lagos will be selected using a stratified random sampling technique. The participants will complete a structured questionnaire that assesses various deviant behaviors, including substance abuse, bullying, vandalism, truancy, and aggression. Additionally, a subset of participants will be selected for in-depth interviews to gain a deeper understanding of the underlying factors contributing to deviant behaviors.
The findings of this study will provide valuable insights into the prevalence rates of different deviant behaviors among secondary school students in Lagos. It will also shed light on the socio-demographic and environmental factors associated with these behaviors. Furthermore, the qualitative data will help identify the underlying causes and motivations for deviant behaviors, such as family dysfunction, peer influence, or academic stress.
The implications of this research for counseling are significant. Identification of the most prevalent deviant behaviors will assist school counselors and educators in developing targeted prevention and intervention programs. The study’s findings will contribute to the development of evidence-based counseling strategies that address the specific needs of students engaged in deviant behaviors. These strategies may include individual counseling, group therapy, peer mentoring, and psychoeducation sessions targeting relevant issues.
In conclusion, this evaluation of deviant behaviors in secondary schools in Lagos will provide a comprehensive understanding of the problem and its implications for counseling. By combining quantitative and qualitative methods, this research aims to generate practical recommendations for educators and counselors to address deviant behaviors effectively. Ultimately, the study seeks to contribute to the creation of a safe and conducive learning environment for secondary school students in Lagos, promoting their overall well-being and academic success.
