Abstract:
Truancy among senior secondary school students is a persistent issue in Lagos State, Nigeria, with detrimental effects on academic achievement and overall well-being. This study aims to investigate the impact of two counseling strategies on reducing truancy rates among senior secondary school students in Lagos State.
The research design employed a quasi-experimental approach, with a pretest-posttest control group design. The sample consisted of 200 senior secondary school students randomly assigned to two groups: the intervention group and the control group. The intervention group received counseling sessions, while the control group did not receive any counseling.
Two counseling strategies were implemented: cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT). The counseling sessions were conducted by trained school counselors over a period of eight weeks. The sessions focused on addressing the underlying causes of truancy, improving students’ problem-solving skills, enhancing their self-esteem and self-efficacy, and promoting positive attitudes towards school attendance.
Quantitative data was collected using a Truancy Assessment Questionnaire administered before and after the counseling intervention. The questionnaire assessed students’ truancy rates, reasons for truancy, and attitudes towards school attendance. The collected data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, and ANOVA.
Preliminary findings demonstrated that both counseling strategies, CBT and SFBT, significantly reduced truancy rates among senior secondary school students in Lagos State. The intervention group exhibited a significant decrease in truancy rates compared to the control group. Additionally, students in the intervention group reported improved problem-solving skills, increased self-esteem, and a more positive attitude towards school attendance.
The findings of this study have significant implications for educational policymakers, school administrators, and counselors in addressing the issue of truancy among senior secondary school students. The implementation of evidence-based counseling strategies, such as CBT and SFBT, can contribute to reducing truancy rates and improving students’ academic engagement and well-being.
Further research is recommended to explore the long-term effects of these counseling strategies and their applicability in different educational contexts. Additionally, qualitative research methods can provide valuable insights into students’ experiences and perceptions of the counseling interventions, further enhancing our understanding of effective strategies to combat truancy.
