Abstract:
Corruption within the academic realm poses significant challenges to the integrity of educational institutions and the overall development of nations. This study aims to explore the perceptions of undergraduates regarding corrupt practices among academics, and to examine the implications of such practices for counselling services and national development.

The research employed a qualitative approach, utilizing interviews and focus group discussions to gather data from a diverse sample of undergraduate students. Thematic analysis was employed to identify common themes and patterns in participants’ perceptions and experiences related to corrupt practices.

Findings revealed that undergraduates perceived various forms of corrupt practices among academics, including bribery, favoritism, plagiarism, and the misuse of research funds. These practices were seen as detrimental to the merit-based nature of academia, eroding trust, and hindering the pursuit of knowledge and intellectual growth. Additionally, participants expressed concerns about the impact of academic corruption on the quality of education, employability of graduates, and the overall socio-economic development of the nation.

The implications of these findings for counselling services and national development are significant. First, the study highlights the need for targeted counselling interventions to address the psychological and emotional impact of academic corruption on undergraduates. Counsellors can provide support, guidance, and coping strategies to help students navigate the challenges and disillusionment resulting from corrupt practices.

Furthermore, the study underscores the importance of fostering ethical values and integrity within the academic community. Educational institutions should develop and implement robust anti-corruption policies, promote transparency, and establish mechanisms to address grievances and whistleblowing. Counselling services can play a crucial role in promoting ethical awareness, fostering a culture of integrity, and encouraging students to report instances of corruption.

From a national development perspective, addressing academic corruption is vital for sustainable growth and progress. Corruption undermines the quality of education, hampers innovation, and perpetuates inequality. By combatting corrupt practices, educational institutions can nurture a conducive environment for learning, research, and knowledge dissemination, thereby contributing to the development of a skilled and ethical workforce.

In conclusion, this study sheds light on the perceptions of undergraduates regarding corrupt practices among academics and emphasizes the implications for counselling services and national development. By addressing academic corruption, fostering integrity, and providing effective counselling support, educational institutions can play a pivotal role in nurturing a generation of ethical and empowered individuals who contribute to the overall development of their nation.
