Abstract:
Suicide among adolescents is a critical public health concern with significant implications for individuals, families, and communities. This abstract provides an overview of a study conducted in Lagos State, Nigeria, which focused on assessing and managing proneness to suicide among in-school adolescents. The study aimed to identify risk factors associated with suicidal ideation, explore the prevalence of suicidal ideation among in-school adolescents in Lagos State, and propose effective strategies for suicide prevention and management.
The study utilized a mixed-methods approach, combining both quantitative and qualitative research methods. A representative sample of in-school adolescents from diverse schools in Lagos State was recruited. The quantitative phase involved the administration of standardized self-report questionnaires to assess various risk factors associated with suicidal ideation, including psychological distress, perceived social support, academic pressure, bullying, and substance use. The qualitative phase involved in-depth interviews with a subset of participants to gain a deeper understanding of the underlying factors contributing to suicidal ideation.
Preliminary findings revealed that a significant proportion of in-school adolescents in Lagos State reported experiencing suicidal ideation. Risk factors such as psychological distress, perceived social isolation, academic pressure, and exposure to bullying were found to be significantly associated with proneness to suicide. Additionally, substance use emerged as a contributing factor to suicidal ideation among some adolescents.
Based on the study findings, recommendations for managing proneness to suicide among in-school adolescents in Lagos State are proposed. These include the implementation of comprehensive mental health programs in schools, enhancing access to mental health services, promoting awareness and destigmatization of mental health issues, fostering supportive school environments, and strengthening collaboration between schools, parents, and mental health professionals.
By addressing the identified risk factors and adopting a multifaceted approach to suicide prevention, it is hoped that the mental well-being of in-school adolescents in Lagos State can be safeguarded. This study contributes to the growing body of knowledge on suicide prevention and provides insights that can inform policy and intervention strategies to mitigate the risk of suicide among this vulnerable population.
