Abstract:
Gender-based violence (GBV) is a pervasive issue that affects individuals across various societies, including married adults. This abstract highlights the factors responsible for gender-based violence among married adults in Kwara State, Nigeria. Understanding these factors is crucial for developing effective strategies to prevent and address GBV in this context.

This study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews, to investigate the factors contributing to GBV among married adults in Kwara State. The quantitative phase involved a representative sample of 500 married adults, while the qualitative phase included in-depth interviews with 20 individuals who had experienced or witnessed GBV.

The findings revealed several key factors contributing to gender-based violence in Kwara State. Firstly, socio-cultural norms and patriarchal beliefs were identified as significant contributors to GBV. Deeply ingrained gender inequalities, traditional gender roles, and perceptions of male superiority were prevalent and reinforced violence within marital relationships.

Secondly, economic factors played a role in perpetuating GBV. Financial stress, unemployment, and poverty heightened tensions within households, increasing the risk of violence. Limited economic opportunities for women also contributed to their vulnerability to GBV.

Thirdly, inadequate legal and institutional frameworks to address GBV were identified as a factor. Weak enforcement of existing laws, limited access to justice, and societal acceptance of GBV hindered efforts to combat this issue effectively.

Furthermore, the study highlighted the influence of alcohol and substance abuse on GBV. Substance abuse, particularly by perpetrators, was found to increase the likelihood and severity of violence within marriages.

This study underscores the need for comprehensive interventions to address GBV among married adults in Kwara State. Recommendations include promoting gender equality, challenging harmful socio-cultural norms, strengthening legal frameworks, and providing support services for survivors. Additionally, efforts should focus on poverty reduction, economic empowerment of women, and awareness campaigns to discourage substance abuse.

In conclusion, this research sheds light on the multifaceted factors contributing to gender-based violence among married adults in Kwara State, Nigeria. By addressing these factors, policymakers, community leaders, and stakeholders can work towards creating a safer and more equitable society, free from gender-based violence.
