Abstract:
This abstract highlights the influence of play on the development of preschool children in Kaduna State, Nigeria. Play is an essential aspect of a child’s development, promoting cognitive, physical, social, and emotional growth. The aim of this study is to explore the significance of play in the overall development of preschool children in the specific context of Kaduna State.
The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative data collection methods. The qualitative aspect involves interviews and observations of preschool children in selected schools across Kaduna State. Additionally, focus group discussions will be conducted with teachers, parents, and early childhood development experts to gather their perspectives on the role of play in children’s development.
The quantitative aspect involves administering standardized developmental assessment tools to assess the cognitive, physical, and socio-emotional development of preschool children. This data will be collected from a representative sample of preschools in Kaduna State.
Preliminary findings indicate that play has a profound impact on the development of preschool children. Cognitive development is enhanced through imaginative play, problem-solving activities, and the acquisition of language and literacy skills. Physical development is fostered through active play, which improves gross and fine motor skills, coordination, and overall physical fitness. Social and emotional development are facilitated through cooperative play, where children learn to interact, negotiate, and develop empathy, emotional regulation, and conflict resolution skills.
The study also reveals that access to quality play materials, appropriate learning environments, and trained teachers who understand the importance of play are crucial for optimal child development. However, challenges such as limited resources, cultural beliefs, and lack of awareness about the benefits of play pose barriers to its effective implementation in preschool settings.
The findings of this study have significant implications for policymakers, educators, and parents in Kaduna State. It highlights the need for promoting play-based learning approaches in early childhood education. Recommendations include incorporating play into the curriculum, providing adequate resources for play activities, and organizing training programs for teachers to enhance their understanding of play and its role in child development.
