The research design employed for this study is a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. A sample of secondary school students from various schools in Onitsha North Local Government Area was selected using a stratified random sampling technique. The participants were asked to complete a structured questionnaire, which assessed their demographic information and explored the factors influencing their career choice. Additionally, a subset of participants was selected for in-depth interviews to gain further insights into their decision-making process.

These factors include personal interests, parental influence, societal expectations, academic performance, career awareness, and gender stereotypes. The survey data revealed a significant relationship between personal interests and career choice, indicating that students tend to choose careers aligned with their passions and talents. Parental influence was also found to play a crucial role, with parents often shaping their children’s career choices through their own aspirations and expectations.

The qualitative interviews provided a deeper understanding of the students’ perspectives and shed light on the influence of societal expectations and gender stereotypes. The participants expressed the desire to conform to societal norms and expectations, often choosing careers perceived as prestigious or financially rewarding. Moreover, gender stereotypes were evident, with male students more likely to opt for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, while female students tended to gravitate towards humanities and social sciences.
