INVESTIGATING THE PHYSIOLOGICAL DEMANDS OF HANDBALL AND ITS EFFECTS ON PERFORMANCE.

Abstract:
Handball is a fast-paced team sport that requires a combination of physical fitness, technical skills, and tactical awareness. Understanding the physiological demands of handball and their effects on performance is crucial for optimizing training programs, enhancing player performance, and reducing the risk of injuries. This study aimed to investigate the specific physiological demands of handball and explore how these demands influence players’ performance.

The research methodology involved a comprehensive literature review of previous studies examining the physiological demands of handball. Key aspects considered in the analysis included cardiovascular demands, metabolic requirements, neuromuscular demands, and anthropometric characteristics of handball players. Additionally, the study explored the effects of fatigue on performance and the recovery strategies employed by players to mitigate the negative impacts.

Findings from the literature review indicated that handball imposes substantial cardiovascular demands, with players frequently operating at high intensities, characterized by intermittent bursts of high-intensity activities interspersed with periods of rest. The metabolic demands of handball primarily rely on the anaerobic energy system, emphasizing the importance of energy production and recovery mechanisms. Neuromuscular demands were found to be significant, highlighting the need for explosive power, agility, and coordination in handball.

Furthermore, the study revealed that fatigue significantly affects handball performance, leading to decreased physical and technical abilities, decision-making skills, and increased injury risk. Recovery strategies such as nutrition, hydration, sleep, and active regeneration techniques were identified as essential for maintaining optimal performance and reducing the likelihood of injuries.

The results of this study contribute to the existing body of knowledge by providing a comprehensive understanding of the physiological demands of handball and their influence on player performance. This information can guide coaches, trainers, and sports scientists in developing evidence-based training programs tailored to the specific needs of handball players. Additionally, the findings may inform injury prevention strategies and recovery protocols to optimize performance and well-being in handball athletes.
