TYPE, CAUSE AND IMPACT OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE AMONG ADOLESCENT GIRLS OF MELKASSA SECONDARY HIGH SCHOOL

Abstract:
Sexual violence is a pervasive issue with severe consequences, particularly among adolescent girls. This abstract explores the types, causes, and impact of sexual violence among adolescent girls attending Melkassa Secondary High School.

The study adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data from a survey and qualitative data from interviews and focus group discussions. A sample of adolescent girls from Melkassa Secondary High School will be recruited to participate in the study.

The study aims to identify the types of sexual violence experienced by adolescent girls, including but not limited to rape, sexual harassment, and coercion. It also investigates the underlying causes of sexual violence, such as gender inequality, societal norms, and lack of awareness about consent and boundaries.

Furthermore, the study examines the short-term and long-term impacts of sexual violence on the physical, psychological, and social well-being of adolescent girls. It explores the immediate consequences, including trauma, depression, and anxiety, as well as the potential long-term effects, such as low self-esteem, academic decline, and increased vulnerability to future victimization.

The findings of this study have significant implications for policymakers, school administrators, and stakeholders involved in adolescent girls’ welfare. By shedding light on the prevalence, causes, and consequences of sexual violence, the study aims to contribute to the development of evidence-based interventions and preventive measures to address this issue effectively.

Sexual violence refers to any sexual act or behavior that is perpetrated against an individual without their consent or against their will. It encompasses a wide range of behaviors, including but not limited to rape, sexual assault, sexual harassment, and coercion. These acts can occur in various settings, including schools.

Melkassa Secondary High School is a specific context where the study focuses on understanding the experiences of sexual violence among adolescent girls. The school environment can play a significant role in shaping social interactions and power dynamics among students, which can contribute to the occurrence of sexual violence.

The causes of sexual violence among adolescent girls are multi-faceted and complex. Gender inequality, societal norms that perpetuate harmful gender stereotypes, and a lack of awareness about consent and boundaries can all contribute to the occurrence of sexual violence. Power imbalances, peer pressure, and the influence of media and popular culture can also play a role.

The impact of sexual violence on adolescent girls can be profound and long-lasting. Immediately following an incident, survivors may experience physical injuries, emotional trauma, and psychological distress such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The consequences can extend beyond the immediate aftermath, affecting various aspects of their lives. Survivors may face difficulties in their academic performance, experience social isolation, develop low self-esteem, and have challenges forming healthy relationships. They may also be at increased risk of re-victimization in the future.
