Abstract:
Drug use, misuse, and dependence among older adults have become a growing concern in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. This abstract aims to highlight the critical influence of drug-related issues on the older adult population in the region.

The demographic shift towards an aging population, coupled with social and economic changes, has created a unique set of challenges for older adults in Akwa Ibom State. While drug use and addiction have historically been associated with younger age groups, recent studies have shown an alarming increase in substance abuse among older adults.

Several factors contribute to the vulnerability of older adults to drug use and dependence. These may include chronic pain, mental health disorders, social isolation, bereavement, retirement, and limited access to healthcare services. Additionally, age-related physiological changes can alter the way drugs are metabolized, increasing the risk of adverse drug reactions and interactions.

The consequences of drug use and misuse among older adults are severe and multifaceted. Physical health complications, cognitive impairment, increased risk of falls and accidents, financial strain, and strained relationships with family and friends are among the many negative outcomes. Furthermore, drug-related issues place a significant burden on healthcare systems, including increased hospitalizations, emergency department visits, and healthcare costs.

Addressing the critical influence of drug use, misuse, and dependence among older adults requires a comprehensive approach. Primary prevention efforts should focus on raising awareness about the risks associated with drug use among older adults and promoting healthy aging practices. Screening and early intervention programs can help identify individuals at risk and provide timely support and treatment options.

Additionally, healthcare professionals should receive specialized training to recognize and address the unique needs of older adults with drug-related issues. Collaborative efforts between healthcare providers, social services, community organizations, and policymakers are crucial to developing integrated care models that promote the well-being and quality of life of older adults in Akwa Ibom State.

In conclusion, the critical influence of drug use, misuse, and dependence among older adults in Akwa Ibom State necessitates urgent attention. By implementing targeted prevention strategies, enhancing healthcare services, and fostering collaboration among stakeholders, it is possible to mitigate the negative impact of drug-related issues and improve the overall well-being of older adults in the region.
