ASSESSING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF NDDC IN SOCIO-ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT OF POOR WOMEN: THE CASE STUDY OF  AKWA IBOM

Abstract:
This study focuses on assessing the effectiveness of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) in promoting the socio-economic empowerment of poor women in Akwa Ibom, Nigeria. The NDDC was established to address the developmental challenges faced by the Niger Delta region and uplift the living standards of its residents.

The specific objective of this research is to evaluate the impact of NDDC interventions on the socio-economic empowerment of poor women in Akwa Ibom. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data analysis and qualitative interviews with key stakeholders, including NDDC officials, women beneficiaries, and community leaders.

The quantitative analysis involves the examination of available data on NDDC projects and programs targeted at women empowerment, such as skill acquisition programs, microcredit schemes, and capacity-building initiatives. The data will be analyzed using statistical techniques to determine the extent of the NDDC’s impact on poverty reduction and women’s economic empowerment in the region.

Additionally, qualitative interviews will provide insights into the perspectives of the beneficiaries and key stakeholders regarding the effectiveness of NDDC interventions. The interviews will focus on gathering information about the experiences and challenges faced by poor women in accessing and benefiting from NDDC programs. Moreover, the interviews will explore the perceptions of the stakeholders regarding the design, implementation, and sustainability of these interventions.

The findings of this study will contribute to the existing literature on the effectiveness of development initiatives in promoting the socio-economic empowerment of poor women. The research outcomes will provide valuable insights for policymakers, development practitioners, and the NDDC in designing and implementing gender-responsive interventions.

By understanding the strengths and weaknesses of the NDDC’s efforts in Akwa Ibom, this study aims to generate recommendations for improving the effectiveness and sustainability of future interventions. Ultimately, the research aims to enhance the socio-economic empowerment of poor women in the region and contribute to the broader goal of inclusive and sustainable development in the Niger Delta.
