USING ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY TO SUPPORT STUDENTS WITH PHYSICAL DISABILITIES IN NIGERIAN INCLUSIVE CLASSROOMS: A CASE STUDY.

ABSTRACT

This case study investigates the implementation and impact of assistive technology in facilitating inclusive education for students with physical disabilities in Nigerian classrooms. Recognizing the pivotal role of technology in leveling the playing field, this research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining assessments, teacher interviews, and classroom observations. The study encompasses a diverse sample of students with varying degrees of physical disabilities, attending inclusive classrooms across different regions in Nigeria. Findings demonstrate that the integration of assistive technology significantly enhances access to education and promotes active participation for students with physical disabilities. Customized assistive tools and technologies, ranging from adaptive keyboards and screen readers to mobility aids and communication devices, empower students to overcome physical barriers and engage fully in the learning process. The study also highlights the importance of accessible digital content and individualized support in maximizing the benefits of assistive technology. However, the research also uncovers challenges in the provision of assistive technology, including limited access to specialized devices and software, the need for targeted training for educators, and considerations for affordability and infrastructure. Additionally, cultural perspectives and attitudes towards disability may influence the acceptance and utilization of assistive technology within the Nigerian educational context. The findings of this case study have significant implications for inclusive education policy and practice in Nigeria. Recommendations are provided for the further development and integration of assistive technology initiatives, emphasizing increased investment in technology resources, professional development for educators, and community awareness campaigns to promote understanding and support for assistive technology. This research contributes to the broader discourse on inclusive education and the empowerment of students with physical disabilities. By showcasing the effectiveness of assistive technology within the Nigerian context, this study advocates for the widespread adoption and integration of evidence-based practices to create inclusive learning environments. The insights gained from this case study can serve as a foundation for further research and inform best practices in supporting students with physical disabilities not only in Nigeria but also in diverse global educational contexts.
