AUGMENTATIVE AND ALTERNATIVE COMMUNICATION (AAC) SYSTEMS FOR STUDENTS WITH COMMUNICATION DISORDERS IN NIGERIAN SCHOOLS: A CASE STUDY.

ABSTRACT

This case study investigates the utilization and impact of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems for students with communication disorders in Nigerian schools. Recognizing the critical importance of effective communication in learning and social interaction, this research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining assessments, parent and teacher interviews, and observations. The study encompasses a diverse sample of students with various communication disorders enrolled in special education programs across different regions in Nigeria. Findings demonstrate notable improvements in communication skills among participants following the implementation of AAC systems. Tailored AAC strategies, ranging from low-tech communication boards to high-tech speech-generating devices, facilitated enhanced expressive and receptive communication abilities. The study underscores the significance of skilled speech-language pathologists, educators, and support staff in customizing AAC interventions to the unique needs and abilities of students with communication disorders. the study also uncovers challenges in the provision of AAC support, including limited access to specialized resources and training for educators, as well as financial constraints in acquiring and maintaining AAC devices. Cultural beliefs and awareness surrounding communication disorders may also influence the acceptance and implementation of AAC strategies within the Nigerian context. this case study carries substantial implications for special education policy and practice in Nigeria. Recommendations are provided for the further development and expansion of AAC programs, emphasizing increased investment in professional development for educators and speech-language professionals, and community awareness campaigns to promote understanding and acceptance of AAC strategies. This research contributes to the broader discourse on inclusive education and the support of students with communication disorders. By showcasing the effectiveness of tailored AAC interventions within the Nigerian context, this study advocates for the widespread adoption and integration of evidence-based practices to enhance communication and participation for students with complex communication needs. The insights gleaned from this case study can serve as a foundation for further research and inform best practices in supporting students with communication disorders not only in Nigeria but also in diverse global educational contexts.
