APPLIED BEHAVIOR ANALYSIS (ABA) INTERVENTIONS FOR STUDENTS WITH EMOTIONAL AND BEHAVIORAL DISORDERS IN NIGERIAN SCHOOLS: A CASE STUDY.

ABSTRACT

This case study delves into the implementation and impact of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) interventions for students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) in Nigerian schools. Recognizing the significance of evidence-based practices in supporting individuals with EBD, this research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining behavioral assessments, qualitative interviews, and classroom observations. The study focuses on a diverse sample of students diagnosed with EBD enrolled in special education programs across various regions in Nigeria. Findings indicate that ABA interventions have a positive impact on the behavior, social interactions, and academic progress of students with emotional and behavioral disorders. Targeted interventions, such as functional behavior assessments, behavior intervention plans, and positive behavior supports, demonstrate significant improvements in behavior regulation, social skills, and academic engagement. Moreover, the research identifies key factors influencing the successful implementation of ABA, including well-trained and dedicated special education teachers, individualized behavior plans, and consistent data collection and analysis. the study also highlights challenges faced in the integration of ABA interventions, including limited access to specialized training for educators, resource constraints, and a need for more tailored solutions to cater to the diverse needs of students with emotional and behavioral disorders. Additionally, attitudinal barriers and stigma surrounding behavioral disorders may impact the willingness to adopt and utilize ABA effectively. this case study hold significant implications for special education policy and practice in Nigeria. Recommendations are provided for the development of comprehensive ABA programs, including increased investment in professional development for educators, provision of resources for behavior support, and community awareness campaigns to reduce stigma surrounding emotional and behavioral disorders. This research contributes to the broader discourse on evidence-based practices in special education and the support of individuals with emotional and behavioral disorders. By highlighting the effectiveness of ABA interventions in the Nigerian context, this study advocates for the adoption and integration of evidence-based practices to improve outcomes for students with EBD. The insights gained from this case study can serve as a foundation for further research and inform best practices in the use of ABA for students with emotional and behavioral disorders globally.
